run away love

“Run away Love” Ludacris ft. Mary J Blige

Theme: Abuse

Approach: Feminist

What is a Feminist approach?

Feminist theory is one of the major contemporary sociological theories, which analyzes the status of women and men in society with the purpose of using that knowledge to better women's lives. Feminist theorists also question the differences between women, including how race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, and age intersect with gender. Feminist theory is most concerned with giving a voice to women and highlighting the various ways women have contributed to society. According to http://sociology.about.com

Elements and principles

Light:

The video portrays dull lighting to give the audience a feel that it’s sad

Theme & Motion:

We watch as the abuse is repeated throughout the video and the only option is to run away

Focal Point:

We focus on each girl and how they are mistreated throughout the video

The video exhibits Physical abuse, sexual abuse, and drug/alcohol abuse…

1.       Physical abuse - Boys and girls are equally likely to suffer maltreatment. In 2005, 47.3 percent of child victims were male, and 50.7 percent were female. Victimization rates were highest among the youngest population of children, birth to 3 years, at a rate of 16.5 per 1,000 children. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Children, Youth, and Families, Children’s Bureau. (2007). The AFCARS report #13. Retrieved may 2, 2016.

2.       Sexual Abuse -   1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse; Self-report studies show that 20% of adult females and 5-10% of adult males recall a childhood sexual assault or sexual abuse incident; During a one-year period in the U.S., 16% of youth ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized;  Over the course of their lifetime, 28% of U.S. youth ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized; Children are most vulnerable between the ages of 7 and 13. https://victimsofcrime.org/media/reporting-on-child-sexual-abuse/child-sexual-abuse-statistics

3.       Drug/Alcohol abuse- People with drug problems can forget to take care of the kids. When family members with drug problems are at home, it may not be safe for the kids. They might not be alert enough to protect kids from accidents or from other adults who would harm them. There might be a lot of fighting. They might abuse or neglect the children.

The video introduces domestic violence and unstable homes. We feel this is what the director wanted to portray to the audience and that is what he did. The understanding we took from this video is that female children are getting abused in the world and this is a major issue and that brought awareness in the song. Which causes listeners to act and be more assertive when it comes to their daughters and nieces etc. to ensure that they are safe.

Art Critique #1

I have chosen to use Cara Lanae aka The Art Babe's digital illustration entitled, "It's Your World," as my first critique. While perusing through Twitter, I came across Cara's account. This illustration was a piece in her "Women x Space...The universe is within us" collection. I chose the work out of this collection because I related to the piece and the meaning. I can see myself in her art, especially since she uses her art to showcase "how it feels to be a black girl." The illustration is a realistic depiction of a black girl's lower face, her mouth and jawline, with a lollipop in her hand. She is licking the lollipop, which is Earth on a white stick. It fits into the background which is space. Mars and Venus are both in the illustrations as they would appear in the solar system. There is a shooting star across the left of the illustration. There are stars throughout the background that makes up the universe and space.
Cara's key icons in this illustration and throughout the collection is women and space. She chooses women because they are powerful, strong and do not get enough credit sometimes. The outer space theme comes from the idea that the universe is within women. There are no boundaries. So, whatever they put to their mind to for it. The world is theirs' for the taking.

Art Appreciation Assignment #2 - Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley is a New York based painter from LA who is known for his bombastic portraits of black men as hip-hop aristocracy, dressed in their own street garb and crowned with Wiley's ornate patterns and golden frame. His photorealistic paintings show a portrait's historical ability to empower the disenfranchised, endowing a royal importance and street cred with his distinctive aesthetic (huffpost)

Death of Chatteron

Mary Little, Later Lady Carr, 2012

Three Graces, 2005

I think Kehinde's use of appropriation in art is extremely incredible. I like he's taken black people, particularly black men, and put them in a whole new light. He's put them in spots usually reserved for people and made them beautiful...human. I also love the painting, Death of Chatteron because it shows a black man surrounded by flowers but he stills shows masculinity. In a community where the fragility of hyper masculinity is rampant, it's important for images as such to exist.

Art Appreciation Blog Assignment #1

Jas Art Aesthetic - Jasmine Hunt

This blog will consist of my art assignments for my art appreciation class. It will be the beginning of my new art blog as I explore and learn more about Art. It will also feature pieces that appeal to me aesthetically.

I like photography and videography as forms of art. They are my two favorites because they are the easiest to understand of the visual arts. I adore make up as visual art and hair and fashion as well. Since, fashion design is my major, it's amazing seeing how designers and stylists bring together their visions creative into fabric and create masterpieces. I also find live art extremely interesting. I really like afrofuturism in art. It's my favorite "ism" of art. I love dance and music as forms of art. Dance is one of my favorite expressions of arts. I think my all time favorite art is digital art and portraits.

I personally don't like sculptures and paintings, that are made in mainstream aesthetics. I don't really understand them. It's easier for me to understand afro-centered paintings and art in general because I relate to it though. I hope that this class helps me to become more open-minded about other art in the same way.
